About

Our group had an intereresting journey towards our final project. We had many great ideas, but our challenge was; we kept getting better ideas in the process.

Firstly, we were interested in contributing to so many current new media debates, and secondly, we had so many ideas for concept visualizations. So - we got overwhelmed.

As we had a deadline to consider, we decided on to try to settle on one of our previous ideas. We decided to make a critical comment on the social effects of persuasive technology, from a satirical perspective. This was an interesting and current topic, a conflict we could all relate to, and we wanted to portray in humorously - as we are all (in our own opinion) very funny people.

Then, after re-reflecting upon our idea, with comments from our peers and lecturer, we came to the conclusion that the visualization would be a challenge.

We therefore decided on specifying on a concept. We were still interested in the social effects of persuasive and digital technology, but we needed to set limitations for our own benefit. Through brainstorming a little more, we came to the idea of investigating children and their use of digital technology, as they are - in constrast to us - born into an internet- and new technology infiltrated world.

Our starting point was a gaming app to encourage children to "not forget" about the "real world", we through research found that our contribution to this debate, would be better placed in commenting on the risk and opportunieties within the web of internet - and not in trying to connect these two - but interconnected - real and virtual worlds.

This is why we created Elli the elephant - the children's guide to explore the (internet-) web of risks and opportunities.
